Funding delays undermining anti-insurgency fight – Agbese urges timely releases

House Deputy Spokesperson Warns of Funding Delays Impacting Military Operations

ABUJA — Deputy Spokesperson of the House of Representatives, Philip Agbese, cautioned on Sunday that delays in disbursing approved funds to the military could hinder Nigeria’s progress in combating insurgency, despite recent operational gains.

Speaking to reporters in Abuja, Agbese attributed the advancements in security operations to improved coordination among the Armed Forces. He emphasized that maintaining this momentum relies heavily on timely financial support.

“Troops are continuing to operate under intense pressure across multiple theaters,” Agbese stated. “Consistent funding is critical in determining the outcome of ongoing military engagements.”

The lawmaker noted the remarkable efforts of the military amid demanding conditions, asserting that commitment alone is insufficient. “Operations of this scale require steady funding, timely releases, and access to modern equipment,” he added.

Agbese commended the Chief of Defence Staff, Olufemi Oluyede, and the Chief of Army Staff, Waidi Shaibu, for their deliberate and strategy-driven approach to evolving security threats. He highlighted intensified offensives and coordinated ground operations in recent months as signs of a shift in operational direction, attributed to better synergy across military formations that has enhanced response capabilities.

“What we are seeing is a leadership that understands the complexity of modern warfare,” Agbese said. “There is clearer coordination, improved morale, and a stronger resolve to confront these threats directly.”

While he pointed to reported successes in dismantling insurgent networks and reclaiming contested areas, Agbese warned that such progress could be reversed without ongoing logistical support.

“Appropriations alone are not enough. The speed and consistency of releases are vital. Delays can slow down operations, weaken logistics, and create opportunities for criminal elements,” he explained.

Agbese urged government institutions responsible for the disbursement of defense funds to expedite their processes and described military financing as essential to national stability. He also called on the public to support security efforts by cooperating with agencies and sharing valuable information, emphasizing that community involvement is crucial for long-term success.

“Our troops are making daily sacrifices to keep the country safe. Supporting them requires cooperation and trust,” he noted.

Further, Agbese stressed that closer collaboration between the military, other security agencies, state authorities, and local communities is necessary to address the root causes of insecurity. He expressed confidence that, with improved funding and sustained leadership, Nigeria could solidify recent gains and work toward restoring stability.

“This is a fight we can win. With the right support and a united effort, a turning point is possible,” he concluded.
