NiMet predicts three days of rain, thunderstorms across Nigeria

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a weather forecast predicting variable conditions across the country from Monday to Wednesday, including sunshine, cloudiness, thunderstorms, and rainfall.

The three-day outlook, released in Abuja on Sunday, detailed expectations for each region.

On Monday, the northern states are anticipated to experience sunny weather interspersed with clouds, alongside potential thunderstorms and moderate rainfall. Morning thunderstorms, paired with moderate rain, are expected in Taraba, Adamawa, and Kaduna states. Similar conditions are forecasted for the afternoon and evening in Borno, Bauchi, Gombe, Jigawa, Katsina, Kano, Kaduna, and Taraba.

The North-Central region, including parts of Plateau, Niger, Nasarawa, and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), will likely see morning thunderstorms and moderate rain. Thunderstorms and moderate rainfall are also expected later in the day across Kogi, Benue, Plateau, Niger, Nasarawa, and the FCT.

In southern Nigeria, moderate morning rainfall is forecast for Ondo, Ogun, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, Lagos, and Bayelsa states, with precipitation becoming more widespread in the afternoon.

The weather pattern is expected to continue on Tuesday, though with variations in impacted areas. Morning thunderstorms and moderate rainfall are likely in Zamfara, Sokoto, Kebbi, Adamawa, and Taraba states, while similar conditions are anticipated in the afternoon across Borno, Jigawa, Yobe, Bauchi, Gombe, Kano, Katsina, Kaduna, Taraba, and Adamawa.

In the North-Central region, NiMet expects morning thunderstorms and moderate rain over Niger and Kwara states, as well as the FCT, with thunderstorms forecast later in the day.

Additionally, light morning rainfall may occur in parts of Cross River, Delta, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, Lagos, and Rivers states in the South. Thunderstorms and moderate rainfall are expected to spread across these areas later.

On Wednesday, NiMet predicts partly cloudy conditions across the North, with possible morning thunderstorms and light rain affecting parts of Bauchi, Jigawa, and Yobe states. The agency expects thunderstorms and moderate rainfall to become widespread later in the day in the northern region.

For the North-Central region, sunny conditions with occasional cloud cover are likely in the morning, transitioning to thunderstorms and moderate rainfall by the afternoon.

In the South, conditions are expected to be generally cloudy, with a chance of light morning rainfall in Edo, Cross River, Delta, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, and Rivers states. Subsequent thunderstorms accompanied by moderate rainfall are anticipated later Wednesday.

NiMet has advised residents in areas forecasted for thunderstorms to exercise caution due to the potential for strong winds preceding rainfall. Residents are encouraged to secure loose items that may be affected by wind and to be mindful of flash flooding, particularly in coastal regions. Safety tips include avoiding driving in flood waters, refraining from travel during heavy rains, disconnecting electrical appliances, and maintaining distance from tall trees.

Airline operators are urged to seek specific weather information from NiMet to assist in operational planning. The agency recommends that the public monitor regular weather updates and consult its official website for additional information.
