Former Military Spokesperson’s Death Highlights Ongoing Security Issues in Nigeria
SOKOTO, Nigeria — The death of retired Major General Abubakar Rabe, a former spokesperson for the Nigerian Army, while in kidnappers’ custody has been labeled a national tragedy by Ahmed Usman, Special Adviser on Security Matters to Sokoto State Governor Ahmed Aliyu.
In a statement released Sunday, Usman expressed deep sorrow over Rabe’s death, which occurred after nearly two weeks of captivity. Rabe was abducted alongside his wife while traveling to Katsina State.
“The death of Maj. Gen. Abubakar Rabe is a painful loss to his family, the Nigerian Army, and the nation as a whole,” Usman said. “He served this country with dedication and honour, and it is heartbreaking that his life ended under such tragic circumstances.”
Usman emphasized that Rabe’s death serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing threats posed by banditry and kidnapping across Nigeria.
“This incident should awaken all stakeholders to intensify efforts aimed at combating banditry and other violent crimes,” he stated.
The security adviser also expressed concern over the continued abduction of Rabe’s wife, calling for immediate action to secure her release.
“We are deeply worried about the fate of his wife and call on security agencies to utilize all available resources to ensure her safe and prompt return,” Usman said.
He further urged authorities to enhance efforts to rescue individuals still held by criminal groups throughout the country.
“Maj. Gen. Rabe’s tragic death should strengthen our collective resolve to free those still in captivity and end the activities of these criminal elements. No family should have to endure such pain and uncertainty,” he added.
Usman called on security agencies to intensify their efforts in tracking down those responsible for these abductions and ensuring they face justice. He encouraged citizens to assist security operations by remaining vigilant and sharing credible intelligence.
In closing, Usman extended condolences to Rabe’s family, the Nigerian Army, friends, and associates, while praying for the peaceful repose of the late officer’s soul.
