Insecurity, poverty undermine decent work – Gov Namadi

Jigawa Governor Addresses Insecurity and Poverty at Workers’ Day Celebration
DUTSE, Jigawa State — Governor Umar Namadi has identified insecurity and poverty as significant barriers to achieving decent work in Jigawa State. His remarks came during the 2026 Workers’ Day celebration held at the Muhammadu Sunusi Bello Durbar Ground on Friday.
The theme for this year’s event, “Insecurity and Poverty as the Bane of Decent Work,” highlighted the pressing issues affecting workers’ productivity and overall well-being.
“These challenges impact daily life and require sustained attention from all of us,” Namadi said, emphasizing the need for targeted policies and shared responsibility to address these issues.
The governor outlined his administration’s 12-point development agenda, which addresses concerns related to agriculture, infrastructure, healthcare, education, and social protection. He specifically mentioned an agricultural transformation initiative aimed at enhancing food security, generating employment, and providing sustainable livelihoods for residents.
Namadi reaffirmed his commitment to engaging in dialogue with organized labor, stating that the government remains open to discussions on workers’ concerns. “We value this partnership and will continue to work together to ensure fairness, transparency, and progress for all workers,” he said.
In his speech, the chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress in Jigawa State, Sunusi Alhassan, acknowledged the government’s efforts to improve workers’ welfare. However, he stressed that addressing poverty and insecurity is essential for ensuring decent work and sustainable livelihoods. He also praised the governor for acknowledging the welfare of civil servants in the state.
