INTERPOL arrests wanted Lagos businessman in Benin, extradites to Nigeria

Lagos Businessman Arrested in Benin Republic, Extradited to Nigeria

A Lagos-based businessman, wanted in connection with multiple killings and property destruction, has been arrested in the Benin Republic and extradited to Nigeria with assistance from the International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL).

The arrest of 38-year-old Ahmed Akanbi was confirmed Monday by Assistant Inspector-General of Police Moshood Jimoh during a briefing at the Zone 2 Command headquarters in Lagos. Akanbi was apprehended on April 15, 2026, at a hotel in Cotonou, following an extensive tracking operation by international law enforcement.

Jimoh stated that Akanbi had been traversing multiple countries since being declared wanted for violent crimes in Lagos State. “This case involves multiple murders, attempted murders, and destruction of lives and property over several years,” he said, noting that Akanbi was wanted alongside accomplices including Safiu Fatai, Yusuf Ismaila, Soji Mascot, and Kenny.

Following his apprehension, INTERPOL operatives in the Benin Republic handed Akanbi over to INTERPOL Nigeria, and he was subsequently transferred to the Zone 2 Command for further investigation. Jimoh indicated that investigations will proceed before formal charges are filed.

The case gained renewed attention after a petition to the Inspector-General of Police prompted a discreet investigation into a series of killings in the Ojomu area of Lagos. Preliminary findings suggested that some of Akanbi’s accomplices had confessed to executing attacks on his instructions, with allegations that he financed these operations.

Jimoh detailed several incidents, including the murders of Sheriff Ishola on April 18, 2023, and Prince Ademola Akinloye on August 26, 2024, both attributed to coordinated and premeditated actions. He noted that earlier police investigations had made significant progress, with new evidence surfacing to further implicate the suspect.

He cautioned against the spread of misinformation and assured the public that due process will be followed to ensure justice. “The Nigeria Police Force remains committed to ensuring that no individual, regardless of status, escapes justice,” Jimoh stated.

He called on those affected by Akanbi’s alleged activities to come forward with information, emphasizing the confidential treatment of all submissions. Victims of property destruction or personal harm were urged to submit complaints without fear.

Jimoh also highlighted the negative impact of such crimes on national development, stating they undermine efforts to attract investment and support local enterprises.

Fidelis Ogarabe, Commissioner of Police with INTERPOL, credited the arrest to effective international collaboration, emphasizing the role of intelligence in locating Akanbi. “Our counterparts in Benin Republic cooperated fully,” he said, noting that items recovered from the suspect would aid ongoing investigations.
