‘Jamaica started Afrobeats’ – Fat Joe claims

Fat Joe’s Afrobeats Claim Ignites Debate
American rapper Fat Joe has generated controversy by asserting that Afrobeats originated from Jamaica. His remarks were made during a recent episode of the “Joe And Jada” podcast, which featured Jamaican dancehall artist Buju Banton.
“Jamaica started Afrobeats. Even though everything comes from Africa,” Fat Joe stated during the discussion.
Banton refrained from disputing Joe’s assertion and instead shifted the conversation to the contributions of Panamanian rapper El General, who is credited with pioneering reggaeton and influencing various genres.
Contrary to Fat Joe’s claim, Afrobeats is widely acknowledged as a genre that emerged from West Africa, with significant development attributed to Nigerian musician Fela Anikulapo-Kuti and his Afrobeat style.
Earlier, Buju Banton had expressed concerns about Afrobeats artists not crediting Jamaican reggae and dancehall music for their influences. In a 2024 interview with the “Drink Champs” podcast, Banton criticized Afrobeats for lacking substance, predicting that it would not endure over time.
