Jigawa Distributes Mama Kits To Boost Antenatal Care, Safe Delivery –

Jigawa State Government Launches Distribution of Mama Kits for Maternal Health
The Jigawa State Government has begun distributing Mama Kits to pregnant and lactating mothers as part of a broader initiative to enhance access to healthcare services for antenatal care, safe deliveries, routine immunizations, and other essential maternal health services.
This initiative seeks to improve healthcare delivery in rural areas and alleviate the challenges faced by expectant and nursing mothers throughout the state. It aligns with Governor Umar Namadi’s ongoing efforts to strengthen primary healthcare services, improve maternal and child health outcomes, and reduce preventable deaths among mothers and newborns.
In the Kaugama Local Government Area, the Mama Kits have been distributed to 11 primary healthcare facilities that serve local communities. Abdullahi Aliyu Karkarna, the Primary Health Care Manager for Kaugama, stated that the kits include essential items required by mothers before and after childbirth. These items consist of rubber bowls, towels, body lotion, soap, diapers, sanitary pads, and female wrappers.
Each healthcare facility received 25 female wrappers along with other delivery materials aimed at supporting pregnant and lactating mothers. Karkarna emphasized that the initiative would encourage more women to attend antenatal clinics, deliver at health facilities, and ensure their children receive necessary vaccinations and healthcare services.
Additionally, the National Programme on Immunization office in Kaugama has started distributing Vitamin A supplements, iron folate tablets, and albendazole for deworming, as well as nutritional screening services for children. Health officials are also providing Azithromycin suspension to prevent and treat bacterial infections in children aged six to fifty-nine months.
Karkarna noted that this intervention falls under the Maternal, Newborn, and Child Health Week programme, which aims to enhance the health and wellbeing of women and children. He called upon the Kaugama Local Government Council to support local health facilities by providing additional delivery kits and essential healthcare materials.
In a response, Honourable Usman Masaki Dansule, the Chairman of Kaugama Local Government, represented by Vice Chairman Umar Magaji, praised the Jigawa State Government for its commitment to improving grassroots healthcare delivery. He committed to presenting samples of the kits to the council chairman for further consideration and support for local healthcare facilities.
Healthcare experts emphasize that increasing access to antenatal care and promoting hospital-based deliveries are crucial steps in reducing maternal and infant mortality rates. The Mama Kits initiative is expected to bolster public confidence in primary healthcare facilities and improve maternal and child health indicators across Jigawa State.
