Judiciary journalists tasked on accurate court reporting ahead of 2027 elections

Judiciary Journalists Urged to Uphold Accuracy Amid Election Season
Abuja, Nigeria — As Nigeria approaches the 2027 election, judiciary journalists have been reminded of the critical importance of objectivity, accuracy, and factual reporting in their coverage of court proceedings.
Mr. Olakunle Olubunmi Olasanmi, the newly elected chairman of the National Association of Judiciary Correspondents (NAJUC), emphasized this need during his inaugural address over the weekend. He stressed that court reporting is a sensitive domain that requires the highest standards of care and impartiality.
Olasanmi highlighted the role of reliable journalism in combating the spread of fake news and the misrepresentation of court rulings, often perpetuated by political figures and other individuals with ulterior motives.
His remarks came shortly after Mr. Kayode Lawal, the previous chairman, officially transferred leadership to Olasanmi and the new executive committee during an event in Abuja.
The new chairman pledged that the organization would collaborate closely with judicial stakeholders and security agencies to eliminate the influence of misinformation and unaccredited reporters at court proceedings.
In discussing future initiatives, Olasanmi announced the formation of a three-member standing committee, which includes Mr. Joseph Kadiri, Mr. Sunday Benjamin Ejike, and Mr. Garry Ochigbo, a member of the executive committee. This group will provide assistance to the association as needed.
He also indicated that a congress would be convened in the coming weeks to review recommendations from the Constitution Review Committee regarding necessary amendments.
“I am grateful for the support and trust of our members,” Olasanmi stated, thanking those who stood by him during the election process. He commended the previous leadership for their accomplishments and expressed his commitment to building upon their legacy.
He extended his appreciation to Lawal, who completed his term, for his guidance and contributions, as well as the Electoral Committee, led by Elder Andrew Orolua, for conducting a smooth election.
In his farewell address, Lawal reflected on his tenure, noting its inception during the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. He credited his administration’s success to the commitment of the members, citing achievements in unity, training, and overall welfare.
Lawal called for continued cooperation with the new leadership, emphasizing that effective leadership is contingent on strong followership. He further offered prayers for Olasanmi and his team, wishing them wisdom and strength in their new roles.
Elder Andrew Orolua, chair of the 2026 Election Committee, congratulated the newly elected officers and urged all members to prioritize the payment of dues, recognizing that financial stability is crucial for the association’s effectiveness.
The newly elected executive committee includes:
- Chairman: Olakunle Olubunmi Olasanmi
- Vice Chairman: Emmanuella Ekele
- General Secretary: Alexander Enumah
- Assistant Secretary: Godfrey Eshiemoghe
- Treasurer: Wandoo Sombo
- Financial Secretary: Austin Okezie
- Welfare Officer: Oluwafemi Kuku
- Provost: Garry Ochigbo.
