Kaduna to procure 120,000 bags of fertiliser, construct 11 roads in Zaria
Kaduna State Council Approves Fertilizer Procurement to Boost Local Farmers
The Kaduna State Executive Council has authorized the procurement of 6,000 metric tons of fertilizer, equivalent to 120,000 bags, aimed at supporting smallholder farmers in the region.
The decision was made during a meeting chaired by Governor Uba Sani on Tuesday. The meeting included the participation of Deputy Governor Dr. Hadiza Balarabe, Secretary to the State Government Dr. AbdulKadir Muázu Meyere, various commissioners, and senior government officials.
In August, Governor Sani previously distributed 400 truckloads of free fertilizer to 100,000 smallholder farmers as part of his commitment to a farmer-first policy. The state also executed its largest fertilizer distribution in 2024, with over 500 truckloads delivered to farmers, in addition to other support for dry-season farming.
At a press briefing following the Executive Council meeting, Commissioner of Information and Culture Malam Ahmed Maiyaki outlined additional council decisions, including the approval of Phase II construction for township roads in Zaria and Sabon Gari local government areas.
Maiyaki stated the project aims to enhance road infrastructure, facilitate the movement of people and goods, boost economic activities, and improve access to local communities. The contract for the construction of six out of 11 approved roads has been awarded to Messrs Mothercat Nigerian Limited. Key road projects include Babban Dodo–Durumi–Kofan Kuyanbana, Rimin Tsiwa–Kofan Gayan, and connections between the Secretariat and Albarkawa, as well as Maje Road, Turunku Road, Waff Road, and Layin Radio.
In addition, five road projects in the two local government areas will be managed by Messrs CGC Nigeria Limited. These include Aba Road, Tudun Wada, and Turunku Road in Sabon Layi, along with Dadda’u Road, Sheikh Umar Muazu Street, and Idris Majeh Street in Fillin Mallawa.
Maiyaki also announced the approval of the Kaduna State Life Skills Policy, which seeks to equip learners with essential knowledge, skills, attitudes, and values for success in education and the workforce. This policy integrates life skills education into formal and non-formal learning through curriculum development and effective teaching.
Furthermore, the council approved the Kaduna State Policy on Gender in Education, aimed at promoting equity and inclusion within schools. This framework addresses barriers to enrollment and participation, reduces dropout rates, supports the progression of all learners, and encourages gender-responsive teaching across educational institutions in the state.
