Kano Court Sentences Man to Death for Robbery and Murder
KANO, Nigeria — A man has been sentenced to death by hanging for the murder of Mubarak Salisu during a robbery involving a Samsung phone, a Kano State High Court ruled on Monday.
Justice Zuwaira Yusuf delivered the verdict, stating that the prosecution successfully proved its case beyond a reasonable doubt. The court found Abdulaziz Umar guilty on all counts, including criminal conspiracy, armed robbery, and culpable homicide.
The incident occurred on October 1, 2020, at approximately 6:00 p.m. in the Race Course area of Badawa, where Salisu was attacked and robbed of his Samsung device, valued at 100,000 naira.
Umar was charged alongside several accomplices—identified as Muyi, Umar Sarki, Diga, Ashosho, and Taduke—who are currently at large. The prosecution, led by Aisha Salisu, a Deputy Director of Public Prosecution in the Kano State Ministry of Justice, presented testimony from four witnesses linking Umar to the crime. In contrast, the defense counsel, Ya’u Abdullahi Umar, called only the defendant to testify.
The charges stated that Umar and his accomplices conspired to rob Salisu, using a knife during the commission of the crime, which led to the victim’s death.
Following the conviction, Justice Yusuf imposed the death penalty in accordance with relevant provisions of the Penal Code Law of Kano State.
