Kwara fire service saves shops from midnight fire

Firefighters Contain Blaze at Commercial Building in Tanke, Ilorin

ILORIN, Kwara State — Firefighters in Kwara State successfully extinguished a fire in the Tanke area of Ilorin early Wednesday, averting significant property damage.

Hassan Adekunle, spokesman for the Kwara State Fire Service, reported that emergency responders received a call at approximately 2:19 a.m. regarding a fire at a storey building adjacent to the Terminus Motor Park on University Road.

Upon arrival, crews encountered a building housing six shops and one kiosk engulfed in flames. Their swift and coordinated efforts contained the fire, ultimately limiting the damage to just one kiosk while preserving the six shops.

“The preliminary investigation indicated that the fire was caused by a power surge,” Adekunle stated.

Alabi Muhammed, director of the Kwara State Fire Service, praised the professionalism and quick response of the firefighters.

He urged the public to hire qualified professionals for electrical installations and to switch off appliances when not in use. Additionally, Muhammed recommended that property owners install surge protection devices to mitigate the risk of fire outbreaks due to power fluctuations.
