Lagos court remands driver accused of stabbing couple during drinks bill dispute
Commercial Bus Driver Remanded After Stabbing Incident Over Unpaid Bill
LAGOS — Kabiru Olajide, a 40-year-old commercial bus driver, has been remanded at the Ikoyi Correctional Centre after facing charges related to an altercation that resulted in injuries to a couple at a local bar. Olajide appeared before the Igbosere Magistrate’s Court, where he was charged with multiple offenses, including assault, malicious damage, theft, and conduct likely to cause a breach of public peace.
The incident took place on May 10, 2026, at a bar located at 2 Olamide Igiaba Street in Ibeju-Lekki, owned by Chimezie and Kate Okpoechi. According to police reports, Olajide and several accomplices held a birthday celebration at the bar, during which they allegedly consumed drinks worth N75,000.
The dispute escalated when the bar owners requested payment for the drinks. Instead of settling the bill, Olajide and his associates reportedly assaulted the couple, with Olajide allegedly using a broken bottle to inflict injuries on both victims.
In addition to the assaults, the group is accused of causing significant damage to bar property, including a Toyota RAV4, with damages estimated at N5 million. Following the incident, a petition to the Assistant Inspector-General of Police led to the formation of a special investigative team tasked with apprehending the suspects.
Olajide was eventually arrested in Ibeju-Lekki after intelligence-led operations and surveillance. Other suspects involved in the incident remain at large.
During the court proceedings, prosecuting counsel Superintendent of Police Reuben Solomon indicated that Olajide’s actions, along with those of his accomplices, violate several sections of the Lagos State Criminal Law of 2015.
Olajide pleaded not guilty to all charges. Magistrate T.O. Abayomi set bail at N500,000, requiring two sureties of a similar amount. Pending the completion of bail conditions, Olajide will remain at Ikoyi Correctional Centre, with the case adjourned to July 17, 2026, for further proceedings.
