Lagos: Nigerian Navy seizes 757kg of suspected cannabis, hands exhibits to NDLEA

Nigerian Navy Intercepts Suspected Cannabis in Lagos Operations
The Nigerian Navy Ship BEECROFT has seized 757 kilograms of suspected cannabis sativa during intelligence-led operations across Lagos State.
The illicit substances, contained in 18 bags, were confiscated in three operations conducted between April 7 and July 15. Following these seizures, the items were transferred to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) at the Navy Base in Apapa for further investigation.
Commodore Aiwuyor Adams-Aliu, the commander of NNS BEECROFT, reported that the operations were executed based on credible intelligence. In the first operation on April 7, five bags of the suspected cannabis were recovered at Abule Osun. Two more bags were intercepted at Ikare Island on April 13, and the largest seizure of 11 bags occurred at Alpha Beach on July 15.
Adams-Aliu attributed the success of these operations to the Nigerian Navy’s Falcon Eye, an advanced maritime surveillance system equipped with long-range cameras and sensors. This technology facilitates monitoring of coastal areas beyond the reach of traditional patrol boats, providing real-time intelligence that allows naval personnel to track suspected traffickers.
He emphasized the Navy’s focus on technology-driven maritime security, underscoring the direction set by Chief of Naval Staff Vice Admiral Idi Abbas.
The commander reaffirmed NNS BEECROFT’s dedication to continuing intelligence-driven operations against drug trafficking and other maritime crimes in collaboration with the NDLEA and other security agencies.
In receiving the confiscated drugs, Commander Luka Yerima of the NDLEA Marine Command commended the Navy for its partnership in combatting illicit drug trafficking. He noted that the agency remains committed to strengthening collaborations with security organizations to dismantle criminal networks involved in the drug trade.
Yerima also stated that forensic analysis of the seized substances would be conducted as part of ongoing investigations to identify and prosecute those responsible for the trafficking operations.
