Leaving Nigeria should be your biggest dream – Skales tells Nigerian youths

Afrobeats Artist Advocates for Youth Emigration, Sparking Debate

Afrobeats singer Raoul John Njeng-Njeng, known professionally as Skales, has called on Nigerian youth to prioritize emigration as a means of securing their futures. In a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, Skales argued that leaving Nigeria would enhance personal safety and increase the potential to achieve one’s dreams.

“As a young Nigerian, your biggest dream should be to leave Nigeria so you can survive and actually achieve your dream by at least staying alive,” he wrote.

The statement has ignited a variety of responses online, with critics accusing Skales of promoting brain drain rather than encouraging young Nigerians to hold their leaders accountable. Some users pointed out that the notion of a guaranteed better life abroad may overlook the reality of racism and other obstacles faced by Nigerians overseas.

Many commenters expressed frustration at Skales’ remarks, highlighting the potential implications of his encouragement to emigrate. User JohnBullaSings criticized the advice, stating, “Just because it worked for you doesn’t mean it’s for everyone. What’s even the mentality of making your biggest dream leaving Nigeria?”

Sally, another commenter, added, “So migrating to white man’s land where your first crime is your skin colour guarantees your security?”

Critics also questioned Skales’ perspective, stressing that emigration might not address the underlying issues plaguing Nigeria. User Okoyemekun remarked on the disparity in how some Nigerians benefit from their country before criticizing it, while Ethealdiadi expressed a commitment to returning to Nigeria, stating, “My dream is not to leave Nigeria. Even if I leave, I’m sure coming back.”

As the discourse continues, the topic of emigration remains a contentious issue among Nigerian youth, reflecting broader concerns about opportunities and safety in the country.
