Major fire disaster averted in Kwara community as tanker detaches from truck
Firefighters in Kwara State averted a significant fire disaster in Olori town on Thursday following a petrol tanker spill. The incident occurred around 9:08 a.m. on the new Jebba highway.
The accident involved a tanker, registered as OYO 45 AA, which was transporting approximately 45,000 liters of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) from Lagos to Abuja. According to reports from the scene, the driver noticed an unusual sound while driving and stopped to inspect the vehicle. Although the driver did not find any visible fault, shortly after resuming their journey, the tank carrying the PMS detached from the truck’s cab, creating a hazardous situation.
The incident took place in a densely populated area surrounded by buildings, shops, and vehicles, posing a significant risk not only to property but potentially to lives.
Firefighters responded promptly, initiating preventive measures by soaking the tanker and its surroundings with water to mitigate the risk of spontaneous ignition. Their efforts were successful, and they remained on standby at the scene until the PMS was safely transferred to another empty tanker.
Alabi Muhammed, the Chief Fire Officer of the state fire service, praised the professionalism and vigilance of the firefighters. He highlighted the critical need for immediate and coordinated action in incidents involving flammable materials.
Muhammed advised tanker operators and drivers to conduct thorough vehicle inspections before and during long trips and to report any unusual sounds, leaks, mechanical issues, or other warning signs to emergency responders immediately. He also urged local residents and motorists to maintain a safe distance from any tanker incidents and to refrain from activities that could create sparks or flames near spilled petroleum products.
