Young Man Killed Following Attempted Break-In in Calabar
CALABAR, Nigeria — A young man was fatally beaten early Friday morning on Ikom Street after attempting to break into a home and rob its occupants. The incident occurred around 4 a.m. when he allegedly tried to assault a woman inside the residence.
According to eyewitness accounts, the woman resisted the assault, prompting her to scream and alert nearby neighbors. Residents quickly intervened, preventing the man from fleeing and overpowering him.
Following his capture, the man was taken to the main Ikom Street, where he was initially restrained by an angry group of locals. Eyewitnesses reported that he confessed to the attempted robbery before being severely beaten.
“We wanted to wait for the police to arrive, but the suspect tried to escape, which led to the angry neighbors attacking him with clubs and other objects,” one witness stated. The man succumbed to his injuries shortly after.
The police spokesperson for Cross River State, ASP Eitokpah Sunday Akata, confirmed ongoing investigations into the incident. He indicated that an official statement would be released in due course.
