Mother dies, daughter survives in Third Mainland Bridge crash

Woman Killed in Lagos Third Mainland Bridge Accident; Daughter Survives

A road accident on Lagos’ Third Mainland Bridge resulted in the death of a woman, while her 30-year-old daughter survived the collision.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) reported that the incident occurred earlier in the day near the Ilaje, heading towards the Iyana Oworo area of the bridge.

Authorities stated the crash involved a head-on collision between two Toyota Sienna vehicles with registration numbers LSR 809 GV and LSR 695 HM. The severity of the impact has renewed concerns about reckless driving, particularly excessive speeding.

LASTMA officials responded quickly to a distress call, deploying operatives who were on routine patrol. They implemented traffic control measures to avert additional incidents, using safety cones to secure the area for other road users.

Emergency response was also provided by personnel from the Oworonsoki Police Division, who documented the scene and began necessary legal proceedings.

According to LASTMA, one adult female lost her life in the accident, while her daughter, who was in the same vehicle, sustained injuries but survived. The remains of the deceased have been removed from the scene, as LASTMA officers, along with other agencies, managed traffic to ensure safety.

Authorities indicated that one of the drivers involved fled the scene after the crash, while the second driver was apprehended by LASTMA personnel and subsequently handed over to the police for investigation and potential prosecution.

“In the aftermath of the crash, one of the drivers absconded from the scene. However, the second driver was promptly apprehended by LASTMA personnel and subsequently handed over to the police to facilitate a thorough investigation,” the agency stated.

Olalekan Bakare-Oki, the General Manager of LASTMA, emphasized the dangers of reckless driving, particularly the consequences of speeding. He urged motorists to adhere to speed limits and practice safe driving habits.

LASTMA reiterated its commitment to ensuring road safety and maintaining smooth traffic flow across Lagos State.
