My elder sister opposed selling Fela’s catalogue – Femi Kuti

Afrobeat Icon Femi Kuti Discusses Preservation of Fela Kuti’s Legacy
Afrobeat musician Femi Kuti has addressed the decision by his family not to sell the musical catalog of his late father, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, despite multiple offers.
In a recent interview with Channels Television, the Grammy-nominated artist explained that the primary motivation for retaining the catalog is to safeguard the iconic Afrobeat pioneer’s legacy.
Kuti highlighted the significant role played by his elder sister, Yeni Kuti, in this decision. He noted that she has been particularly vocal in opposing any sale of their father’s work, emphasizing her role as a protector of Fela Kuti’s legacy.
While the family has refrained from selling the catalog outright, they have temporarily licensed Fela’s music to a foreign company. “We have never sold Fela’s catalog. It remains under the control of Fela’s estate, which is managed by the family,” Kuti stated. “However, we have licensed the music. We maintain control over it, and once the licensing period is complete, we can reevaluate our options.”
Kuti acknowledged Yeni Kuti’s leadership, saying, “She is like the caretaker and commands respect as the eldest among us. It doesn’t mean the rest of us lack a voice, but her protection of Fela’s legacy has been instrumental in our consensus to retain ownership.” He further remarked, “Had we sold the catalog, no royalties would be coming to the family.”
Looking ahead, Kuti expressed hope that future generations will uphold the family’s commitment to protecting Fela Kuti’s legacy.
