NCDC Issues Nationwide Alert on Ebola Preparedness Amid Regional Outbreak

Nigeria’s NCDC Issues Public Health Advisory Amid Ebola Outbreak

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has issued a national public health advisory directed at Health Commissioners across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory in response to a regional outbreak of Bundibugyo Ebola Virus Disease (EVD).

While Nigeria has not reported any confirmed cases linked to this outbreak, the advisory emphasizes the need for immediate enhancements in preparedness measures to prevent the potential importation and spread of the virus.

The NCDC advocates for the implementation of early detection systems and rapid response mechanisms, along with improved infection prevention and control practices. The agency also calls for enhanced laboratory preparedness and adequate safeguards for healthcare workers, who play a crucial role in managing such outbreaks.

Included in the advisory is a comprehensive overview of the regional outbreak, along with a risk assessment designed to aid states in evaluating their preparedness levels. Risk stratification has been established to guide states on the likelihood of virus importation and potential transmission.

States and the Federal Capital Territory are urged to intensify coordination efforts, strengthen surveillance systems, and implement effective case management protocols. The NCDC highlights the importance of clear public communication to raise awareness and mitigate panic.

The agency reaffirmed its commitment to collaborating with state governments and relevant partners to enhance national preparedness and protect public health. Proactive measures are deemed essential to safeguarding Nigerians against any potential EVD outbreak.
