Nigerian Army recovers remains of soldier-couple murdered while traveling for traditional wedding

Nigerian Army Dismantles IPOB-Linked Camp in Imo State
The Nigerian Army announced that troops from the 82 Division have successfully dismantled a camp linked to the banned Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and the Eastern Security Network (ESN) in Imo State.
In a statement released via its official account on X, the Army indicated that the operation was conducted on April 24, 2026, following credible intelligence, in the Ubaha Orsu area of Orsu Local Government.
This operation aimed to eliminate the IPOB/ESN hideout and locate the remains of two Nigerian Army personnel—Master Warrant Officer Linus Musa Audu and Private Gloria Mathew—who were abducted and killed by terrorists in May 2022 while en route to their traditional wedding.
According to the Army, the troops encountered heavy gunfire upon approaching the suspected hideout. They managed to repel multiple ambushes, forcing the attackers to retreat.
“The encounter further revealed the desperation and criminal nature of the group, which continues to target innocent citizens and security personnel alike,” stated the Army.
Following the successful clearing of the camp, troops conducted a thorough search and discovered shallow graves believed to contain the remains of the slain personnel. The graves were excavated, and the suspected remains were recovered.
The Army confirmed that the recovered remains are now secured for forensic analysis, including DNA testing, to verify their identities. The statement indicated that efforts are ongoing to coordinate with the families of the fallen soldiers to facilitate proper identification and arrangements for a respectful burial.
“This operation not only underscores the Nigerian Army’s commitment to justice for fallen heroes, but also highlights the continued degradation of IPOB/ESN criminal networks in the Southeast,” the Army emphasized.
The discovery of shallow graves within the camp was noted as evidence of the group’s disregard for human life.
The Nigerian Army reassured the public that operations would continue until all criminal elements are eradicated and lasting peace is achieved. “We appreciate law-abiding citizens for their cooperation and urge them to remain vigilant and continue supporting security agencies with timely information,” the statement concluded.
