Nigerian passenger sues British Airways over alleged missing luggage

Federal High Court to Continue Hearing in British Airways Luggage Dispute
Abuja – The Federal High Court has scheduled July 2 for the next session in a lawsuit filed by passenger Amechi Michael against British Airways concerning alleged missing luggage.
During the resumption of proceedings, the plaintiff was cross-examined by the airline’s defense attorney, John Godwin. Michael testified that he reported the incident to British Airways’ customer service and was subsequently directed to the UK-based Centre for Effective Dispute Resolution (CEDR) for assistance.
He informed the court that while an arbitrator ruled in his favor regarding a flight delay, the issue of the missing carry-on luggage was not addressed in the award.
Dissatisfied with the outcome, Michael rejected the arbitral decision and sought recourse in the Federal High Court. He contends that British Airways had a duty to safeguard his belongings and alleges negligence on the part of the airline’s staff.
Michael’s attorney, Barrister Abiola Olaitan, indicated her intention to conclude her client’s case in court.
Justice Obiora Egwuatu subsequently adjourned the hearing to July 2 for the defense presentation and continuation of the trial. The case, marked FHC/ABJ/CS/1293/2025, centers on Michael’s claim that his carry-on luggage was lost following a delay in boarding, after a cabin crew member requested he surrender it for safekeeping.
