NDC Vice Presidential Candidate Backs One-Term Pledge of Peter Obi
Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the vice-presidential candidate for the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), expressed strong confidence in Peter Obi’s commitment to serve only one term if elected in the 2027 presidential election.
In an interview on News Central’s “60 Minutes with Mr. Kay,” Kwankwaso addressed inquiries regarding Obi’s pledge for a single four-year tenure and subsequent presidential ambitions. He reaffirmed that Obi has publicly promised this commitment and should be trusted to uphold it.
“I personally believe Peter Obi is a gentleman, and I have every reason to trust him, especially since he made this statement in public,” Kwankwaso said. “No one should have any reason to doubt him.”
Kwankwaso elaborated that the power-sharing arrangement within the NDC is predicated on mutual trust and agreements among coalition partners. He emphasized the importance of Southern representation, suggesting that allowing the South to fulfill an eight-year term aligns with a consensus reached by alliance members.
“We believe the southern part of the country should complete its second term. In this country, I don’t believe any gentleman would want to renege or change his mind,” Kwankwaso stated.
The former governor of Kano State highlighted that the coalition has crafted a shared governance roadmap guiding whoever eventually leads the country. He noted that the NDC is focused on implementing its unified agenda rather than promoting the interests of a specific political faction.
“More importantly, we have collectively developed short-term, medium-term, and long-term plans for the country. It does not matter whether it is him from the Obidient side, or myself from the Kwankwasiyya side, or any other faction; we believe we have an agenda,” he said.
Kwankwaso asserted that the coalition will strive to ensure continuity in its programs, regardless of who occupies the presidency in the future. “That agenda, we will ensure that whoever comes—maybe Peter, maybe me, or any other person—will adhere to that program,” he added.
