Controversy trails Toluwanisings’ death as artistes threaten legal action

Nigerian Gospel Singer’s Death Sparks Controversy and Legal Threats

The death of Nigerian gospel artist Olayemi Bayonile Bolaji, known as Toluwanisings, has ignited controversy following allegations of hospital negligence, familial disputes regarding burial arrangements, and legal threats aimed at individuals allegedly linking other gospel singers to his passing.

According to DILY POST, Toluwanisings died on October 14 after reportedly collapsing at his home in Ibadan, Oyo State. His personal assistant, Babadunni Olayemi, stated that attempts to save the artist involved visits to as many as eight hospitals, some of which allegedly failed to provide adequate treatment.

In response, the University College Hospital (UCH) in Ibadan clarified that it has no record of Toluwanisings being admitted for care. Hospital officials also noted that services had resumed following a recent suspension of a strike by resident doctors.

These allegations have prompted widespread concern about the state of emergency medical care in Nigeria and the challenges faced by patients seeking urgent treatment.

The controversy has escalated into a legal matter, with gospel singers Tope Alabi, Ayobami Ajewole—commonly known as Woli Agba—and Olamide Oladimeji, also known as Dele Omo Woli, each threatening legal action against those spreading claims that they are connected to the singer’s death.

Alabi’s legal team issued a cease-and-desist notice demanding the removal of the contested publications, along with a retraction and an apology, characterizing the allegations against her as false and defamatory.

Similarly, Woli Agba and Dele Omo Woli’s attorneys have cautioned social media users against sharing or circulating unverified claims about their alleged roles in Toluwanisings’ death. They warned that those who repost or amplify defamatory statements may also face legal repercussions.

Compounding the situation, reports indicate a rift between the deceased singer’s father and his widow regarding burial arrangements. His father, Muniru Adekunle Olayemi, reportedly expressed a desire to bury his son either at his residence or in Ikirun, Osun State, alongside his late mother. In contrast, the widow has preferred burial in a cemetery or church, though her detailed perspective on the disagreement remains unreported.

As the family plans for the singer’s funeral, the various controversies—including hospital claims, legal threats, and familial disputes—continue to draw significant public scrutiny. The exact circumstances surrounding Toluwanisings’ death remain ambiguous, with no official medical cause disclosed in available reports.

The incident has reignited discussions regarding the efficacy of emergency medical services in Nigeria, urging calls for improved coordination among hospitals and increased accountability in the healthcare sector.
