Northerners to blame for insecurity in region – Lamido

Former Jigawa Governor Blames Insecurity in Northern Nigeria on Leadership Failures
KANO, Nigeria — Alhaji Sule Lamido, the former governor of Jigawa State and a prominent member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has attributed the ongoing insecurity in Northern Nigeria to inadequate leadership and a decline in moral standards.
In an interview on Premier Radio Kano Wednesday, Lamido called on the people of the North to recognize their role in the escalating security crisis. He emphasized the need for renewed efforts to instill discipline and proper upbringing among the youth.
“The North must acknowledge its responsibility for the insecurity it faces,” Lamido stated. “Political leaders have neglected their primary duty of safeguarding lives and property, focusing more on political maneuvering than effective governance.”
He expressed concern about the impact of political figures on the lives of young people, suggesting that their actions contribute significantly to the region’s destabilization.
“Northerners should take accountability for the insecurity plaguing us,” Lamido said. “Politicians are contributing to the destruction of young lives, exacerbating the crisis by manipulating and overlooking the youth.”
Lamido further asserted that individuals involved in insurgency and banditry originate from within the region. “Where do Boko Haram members and bandits come from? They are our children, not outsiders. They have become formidable due to moral decay, and it is our responsibility to address this issue by focusing on foundational values and upbringing at home.”
He also expressed support for the establishment of state police as a potential measure to enhance security, provided that these forces receive adequate training and oversight.
“There is nothing inherently wrong with state police,” he noted, “but they must be properly trained and guided in their responsibilities.”
Lamido criticized the troubling trend of fellow Northerners kidnapping and demanding ransoms, questioning the morality behind such actions. “It is alarming that a northerner can arrest another northerner for ransom, while leaders remain preoccupied with political affairs,” he said.
He concluded by underscoring the importance of justice and fairness among Northerners as essential elements in restoring peace and stability to the region.
