NPFL: Pre-season tournament will get clubs ready for CAF challenges – Owumi
Davidson Owumi, Chief Operating Officer of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), announced that a pre-season tournament in Jos will serve as a crucial preparatory opportunity for Nigerian clubs participating in CAF club competitions.
The tournament will include league champions Rangers International, runners-up Rivers United, and President Federation Cup winners El-Kanemi Warriors, among others. Additionally, two wildcard teams from Plateau State, Plateau United and Mighty Jets, will compete in the event, while Katsina United will replace Shooting Stars following a late invitation.
“Considering that our season would be commencing a few days before the CAF club matches, the NFF and NPFL resolved that it would benefit the clubs to have their players participate in a competitive tournament to further deepen their fitness and cohesion,” Owumi stated, according to NPFL media.
The 2026/27 NPFL season is set to begin on Friday, August 28, 2026, with Rangers facing Katsina United in the opening match.
