NSCDC Arrests Man for Illegal Firearm Possession and Checkpoint Activities in Taraba State
The Taraba State Command of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) announced the arrest of a 40-year-old man for alleged possession of a locally made firearm and involvement in unlawful checkpoint operations in the Kurmi Local Government Area.
Jonathan Wunuji was apprehended on May 2 in Visaula town, following what officials described as credible intelligence. He was subsequently presented at the NSCDC state headquarters in Jalingo.
Iliya Samaila, the command’s spokesperson, addressed the media on behalf of State Commandant Anthony Bala Bitrus, confirming that Wunuji was found with an unlicensed, locally manufactured pistol and two live cartridges.
During the operation, Wunuji allegedly threatened to open fire on NSCDC personnel. However, officials reported that he was disarmed before he could follow through on the threat.
Preliminary investigations indicate that Wunuji may have been working with accomplices to intimidate local residents. Authorities also allege that he operated an unlawful checkpoint where he extorted money from motorists and pedestrians, despite prior warnings from community leaders and law enforcement.
The NSCDC stated that Wunuji has confessed to the charges and will be promptly arraigned in court.
Samaila emphasized the command’s commitment to combatting criminal activities and urged the public to assist security agencies by providing timely and accurate information, underscoring the importance of community intelligence for maintaining peace and security in Taraba State.
