Obi emerges NDC’s sole presidential aspirant

NDC Closes Presidential Form Sales; Obi Sole Aspirant

By Henry Umoru

ABUJA — The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has officially concluded the sale of Expression of Interest and Nomination Forms for its presidential ticket for the 2027 elections. As of the close of business, only Mr. Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate and former governor of Anambra State, has submitted his nomination.

In addition to the presidential forms, the NDC announced an extended one-week deadline for the collection of Expression of Interest Forms for other elective positions, including state governorship, Senate, and House of Representatives seats.

Mr. Ikenna Morgan Enekweizu, the NDC’s National Secretary, confirmed that the original deadline of May 17, 2026, at 6:00 p.m. has been pushed back to May 24, 2026, at midnight. This extension applies exclusively to aspirants for the non-presidential positions, while the collection of presidential forms has officially closed.

According to the party’s timetable, screening for all candidates who successfully completed and submitted their forms will take place from May 19 to May 26, 2026. The collection and return of Nomination Forms for those candidates who are cleared will also occur during this time frame.

The NDC has emphasized that no further extensions will be granted beyond the newly set deadlines and urged all aspirants to adhere strictly to the guidelines provided. All candidates are required to attend screening sessions at designated locations nationwide, bringing essential documentation, including educational certificates, birth certificates or declarations of age, passport photographs, voter’s cards, NDC membership cards, and curricula vitae. Each document submitted to the Screening Committee must consist of six copies.

Screening will focus on candidates’ alignment with the electorate’s desires, local conditions, individual capacity, competence, and character. The NDC has also directed the Screening Committee to prioritize the party’s affirmative action policies aimed at supporting women, youths, and individuals with disabilities.

Candidates have been encouraged to engage in consensus-building efforts, as only those cleared during the screening will be eligible to purchase nomination forms.

Given these developments, Peter Obi, who recently transitioned to the NDC from the African Democratic Congress, is poised to emerge as the party’s consensus presidential nominee.
