Minister Urges Scrutiny of Peter Obi’s Claims Ahead of 2027 Election
Festus Keyamo, Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, stated that Nigerians are prepared to critically evaluate the assertions made by Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), as the 2027 election approaches.
Keyamo shared his comments on social media Thursday, amid ongoing disputes between Obi and the Anambra State Government regarding the financial records from Obi’s tenure as governor.
The minister rejected claims that the focus on Obi indicates an obsession with the former governor, asserting that scrutiny is essential to verify the veracity of his statements.
“I see some suggestions that everyone is ‘obsessed’ about Peter Obi because we are always talking about him. I am sorry, but they miss the point,” Keyamo wrote. He claimed that Obi made misleading statements during the 2023 election campaign, which he feels did not receive appropriate examination at the time.
“When someone lies per second, you also have to fact-check him per second,” Keyamo stated. He contended that while Obi may have evaded accountability in the past, Nigerians are now resolved to assess every assertion made by him.
The exchange between Obi and the Anambra State Government has intensified, with the state alleging that some loans incurred during Obi’s administration remain unresolved and are still being serviced. Additionally, the government has disputed Obi’s assertion that he left N2.13 billion in a First Bank account designated for the Oko and Umuchiana erosion project.
Obi, for his part, has consistently maintained that he exited office without any outstanding debts, unpaid salaries, pensions, gratuities, or obligations to contractors for completed projects.
Keyamo emphasized that the extent of public discourse surrounding Obi correlates directly with the claims he makes. “Therefore, to put it simply, the amount of time we talk about Peter Obi is directly proportional to the amount of lies he tells,” he remarked.
