Ogun police arrest driver, guarantor for vehicle theft, foil smuggling attempt

Ogun State Police Foil Vehicle Trafficking Attempt, Two Suspects Arrested
Operatives from the Idiroko Division of the Ogun State Police Command have successfully intercepted a cross-border vehicle trafficking operation, resulting in the arrest of two individuals and the recovery of a stolen 28-seater Toyota Coaster bus.
The suspects, identified as Seun Lawal, 46, and Ademola Oriyomi, 38, were apprehended on Friday, following an operation based on credible intelligence received shortly before midnight on June 12, 2026. According to a statement from the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, the bus was reported stolen from Lagos.
The investigation revealed that Lawal, who served as the bus driver, conspired with Oriyomi, his guarantor, to smuggle the vehicle into the Benin Republic. They allegedly intended to sell the bus to fund their relocation after the illicit transaction.
Babaseyi noted that law enforcement acted promptly to intercept the suspects while they were preparing to move the vehicle at the Babaloke area of Idiroko. During the operation, police shot one of the bus’s tires to prevent its escape.
“Preliminary investigation indicates their intention was to facilitate the vehicle’s illegal sale in the Benin Republic,” Babaseyi said. Both suspects are currently in custody as police continue their investigation into potential ties to broader cross-border vehicle theft networks.
The Commissioner of Police for Ogun State, CP Bode Ojajuni, praised the diligence and tactical expertise of CSP Adejuwon Ariyo and the Idiroko Division operatives. He reiterated the police command’s commitment to enhancing border security and proactive policing efforts to combat criminal activity in the region.
Ojajuni called on the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to law enforcement agencies.
