OOU final-year student shot dead during robbery attack

Final-Year Olabisi Onabanjo University Student Killed in Armed Robbery

Ago-Iwoye, Nigeria – A final-year student at Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), identified as Timi, was fatally shot during an armed robbery on Thursday in the Konigba area, known for its student population.

Sources report that the assailants targeted approximately seven residences in the neighborhood, including Timi’s home. Eyewitnesses indicated that the robbers gained entry by breaking doors and climbing onto roofs. They allegedly stole phones, laptops, cash, gas cylinders, and other valuables.

In response to the tragic incident, students took to the streets to protest, demanding accountability from local authorities. They marched to the palace of the Ebumawe of Ago-Iwoye, Oba Abdulrazaq Adenugba, the Ago Police Station, and the university campus, chanting unity songs and displaying placards that bore messages including “Ago-Iwoye is not safe, we need our safety” and “Say no to insecurity.”

The university administration reacted by declaring Thursday a lecture-free day, allowing students to mourn their classmate. An official statement from Mr. Niyi Oduwole, Deputy Registrar and Head of Corporate Affairs, stated that Vice-Chancellor Professor Ayodeji Agboola suspended all academic activities for the day.

The university extended its condolences to Timi’s family and reassured students that efforts would be made in collaboration with security agencies to enhance safety measures both on campus and in surrounding areas. They urged students to remain calm and avoid actions that could escalate tensions, promising that preventive measures are in development.

In an update, police spokesperson DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi confirmed that an investigation is underway and a manhunt for the perpetrators has been launched. The Ogun State Police Command expressed its condolences to Timi’s family and the university community, stating that officers responded swiftly and are committed to resolving the case.

“The Ogun State Police Command has commenced an investigation into the tragic death of an Olabisi Onabanjo University student shot by suspected armed robbers in Ago-Iwoye,” Babaseyi said. “Investigation is ongoing, and we pray for the deceased’s soul to rest in peace.”
