Plateau: Gunmen kill Irigwe youth leader two months after election

Youth Leader Killed in Suspected Militia Ambush in Plateau State
A youth leader and member of the Miango Youth Development Association, John Telle Danjuma, was fatally shot by gunmen believed to be affiliated with Fulani militias. The attack occurred on June 25, 2026, in the Gyu community, located in the Bassa Local Government Area of Plateau State.
In a statement released on Saturday, Weyi Agara, Publicity Secretary of the MYDA, confirmed that Danjuma was ambushed while returning home from an event. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Danjuma, who held the position of Director of Social within the organization, had been in office for just two months, having been sworn in with newly elected officials in April.
“The Miango Youth Development Association mourns the brutal killing of our newly sworn-in Director of Social, Mr. John Telle Danjuma, popularly known as Excoba,” Agara stated. He emphasized that Danjuma, a longstanding community servant in his early 30s, was dedicated to the advancement of the Irigwe people.
Agara noted that Danjuma leaves behind a young wife and a small child who now face a future without him. “His life was cut short in active service,” he said.
The statement further described the attack as part of a broader pattern of violence against the Irigwe community.
As of the time of publication, Plateau State Police Command spokesman SP Alfred Alabo could not be reached for comment, nor had the Command issued an official statement regarding the incident.
