Police arraign 123 drivers over covered, missing number plates

Kano State Police Arraign 123 Drivers for Vehicle Plate Violations

The Kano State Police Command reported the arraignment of 123 drivers for operating vehicles with covered, defaced, or missing number plates following the initiation of “Operation Clean Plates.”

At a press briefing on Monday, Commissioner of Police Ibrahim Adamu Bakori stated that the operation aims to prevent criminals from using unregistered vehicles to avoid detection. “The objective remains clear: to rid Kano State of vehicles plying our roads with covered, defaced, or no registration numbers,” Bakori emphasized.

All drivers of the intercepted vehicles are facing prosecution under the law, according to the commissioner. He noted that the police successfully intercepted the vehicles across all 44 local government areas in Kano State during the enforcement activity.

Bakori also highlighted a significant incident reported by officers from the Panshekara Police Division on July 9. Officers stopped a vehicle without a registration plate in Kano metropolis, where the driver, identified as 51-year-old Mahi Ibrahim of Rijiyar Zaki, allegedly attempted to flee before being apprehended.

A subsequent search of Ibrahim and the vehicle resulted in the recovery of a Beretta pistol, dried leaves believed to be cannabis, a knife, electric wires, 120 lithium batteries, and a vehicle suspected of being stolen. The suspect has since been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further inquiry, and investigations are ongoing to trace the origins of the recovered items.

Bakori underscored that these developments validate the operation’s rationale. “This arrest illustrates the very reason we launched ‘Operation Clean Plates.’ Vehicles without proper identification are being used to facilitate the movement of suspicious individuals, firearms, narcotics, and other hazardous items across the state,” he said.

The commissioner confirmed that the operation would persist throughout all local government areas and urged vehicle owners to register their vehicles properly and display standard number plates at all times. He also called on residents to collaborate with the police and report any unprofessional conduct by officers through designated complaint channels.
