Delta State Police Arrest Community Leader and Two Others for Alleged Torture

The Delta State Police Command has arrested and charged three individuals, including the chairman of the Emevor Community, in connection with the alleged torture of a resident depicted in a viral social media video.

The arrests were announced by Police Public Relations Officer SP Bright Edafe on July 10, 2026. Following the video’s circulation, Commissioner of Police Yemi Oyeniyi initiated an investigation into the incident.

The investigation, prompted in part by a petition from human rights activists, uncovered that the victim was unlawfully detained on July 5, 2026. He was reportedly taken to a hotel in Emevor Community, located in the Isoko North Local Government Area, where he was subjected to assault and intimidation.

Those arrested include 48-year-old Lucky Okeremu, the Emevor Community chairman, along with 46-year-old Okiemute Oyibo and 45-year-old Karo Akamakusi. The trio has been arraigned on multiple charges, including conspiracy, assault causing harm, and making threats against the victim’s life.

According to the police statement, the suspects were allegedly working with other individuals who remain at large. They are accused of unlawfully detaining the victim and subjecting him to severe humiliation and physical violence, including threats of death.

Authorities have indicated that efforts are ongoing to apprehend the additional suspects involved in this case.

Commissioner Oyeniyi emphasized the importance of community leaders and vigilante groups in supporting law enforcement efforts but reiterated that they lack the authority to inflict violence or administer punishment. He urged vigilante groups to ensure that all suspects are turned over to police for proper investigation and prosecution in accordance with the law.
