Police arrest 79 suspects during Takutaha celebration in Kano
The Kano State Police Command reported that the 2026 Takutaha celebration took place without incident across the state, resulting in the arrest of 79 suspects, as well as the recovery of dangerous weapons and illicit drugs during security operations.
The celebration occurred on Tuesday, September 1, with security personnel deployed statewide to ensure public safety.
In a statement released Wednesday, Police Public Relations Officer CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa attributed the peaceful execution of the festivities to well-coordinated, intelligence-driven policing efforts. “The 2026 Takutaha Celebration held on September 1 was observed peacefully across the state,” the statement noted.
Commissioner of Police Ibrahim Adamu Bakori praised residents for their cooperation, support, and orderly behavior during the event. The police command also acknowledged the roles played by the Kano State Government, traditional leaders, religious organizations, community stakeholders, and other security agencies, including local vigilante groups.
The arrests resulted from coordinated operations conducted by the Anti-Daba, Anti-Kidnapping, and VCRU tactical units, along with personnel from various police divisions, including Ungogo, Sharada, Bachirawa, Rijiyar Lemo, Mandawari, Kwalli, and Gwale.
In addition to the arrests, the operations led to the seizure of weapons and illegal drugs. The police confirmed that all suspects are currently under investigation and will be charged in court following the completion of their inquiries.
The command also reported an incident involving a casualty, which is under investigation. Authorities encouraged the community to continue providing timely and credible information regarding suspicious activities and individuals.
