Police arrest two suspected kidnappers, cattle rustlers in Yobe

Two Suspected Criminals Arrested in Yobe State Police Operation

Yobe State Police Command has arrested two individuals linked to various criminal activities, including kidnapping, armed robbery, and cattle rustling, during a recent operation.

The Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Dungus Abdulkarim, announced the arrests in a statement released Thursday.

On July 15, officers from the Command’s Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) apprehended 19-year-old Kollo Kashim in Sabon Garin Guba, within Bursari Local Government Area, acting on credible intelligence. The investigation revealed Kashim conspired with two accomplices, Modu Bayama and Ba’ani Mallah, who remain at large.

According to the statement, the suspects allegedly impersonated Boko Haram members to intimidate local herders. They armed themselves with a makeshift wooden gun and carried a paper with Arabic inscriptions to demand illegal levies from their victims. The group reportedly extorted a total of 253,000 naira from four individuals.

During the operation, police recovered a wooden gun, a paper with Arabic writing, and 36,000 naira, believed to be part of the extorted funds.

The police indicated that investigations are ongoing to locate the fleeing accomplices and recover additional evidence.

In a separate incident, VCRU operatives arrested 22-year-old Hussaini Umar from Kahere in Kumo Local Government Area of Gombe State. He was found in possession of a fabricated revolver. During questioning, Umar reportedly admitted to taking part in a series of kidnappings and cattle rustling incidents linked to a larger criminal network operating in Wase Local Government Area of Plateau State.

Authorities have transferred Umar to the Plateau State Police Command for further investigation and prosecution as part of efforts to apprehend other members of the criminal syndicate.
