Kogi Police Recover Body After Funeral Convoy Attack

KOGI — The Kogi State Police Command has recovered a body being transported for burial following an attack by suspected bandits on a funeral convoy along the Ochadamu–Ejule Expressway.

The deceased, Augustine Ikwue, an official with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), passed away in Lokoja and was en route to his hometown in Otukpo, Benue State, when armed assailants intercepted the Hummer bus carrying his remains on July 9, 2026.

Police Public Relations Officer ASP Salisu Oyiza confirmed that the attackers forced the passengers into the bush after intercepting the vehicle.

In response to a distress call, a coordinated rescue operation was launched involving police, military personnel, the Vigilante Group of Nigeria, and Community Policing teams. Oyiza noted that the abandoned vehicle and the casket were recovered, and the body has been deposited at the Elemona Mortuary in Ejule.

The joint security team has intensified search efforts in the Ugbakpedo and Ofejiji forests, while also increasing surveillance and patrols along major highways in the region.

Oyiza assured the public that ongoing efforts are focused on rescuing the kidnapped individuals and apprehending those responsible for the attack.

Authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant and continue providing timely and credible information to assist with security operations.
