Police reforms: IGP appoints DCP Abubakar to head newly restructured monitoring unit

Nigerian Police Restructures Monitoring Unit for Improved Efficiency
The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has approved a comprehensive restructuring of the Police Monitoring Unit as part of efforts to enhance operational efficiency and internal oversight within the Nigeria Police Force.
A statement issued by Deputy Commissioner of Police Anthony Okon Placid outlined the objectives of the restructuring, emphasizing the need to realign the unit with its core responsibilities and address identified operational deficiencies. The reform aims to establish the unit as a credible mechanism for internal accountability.
Key elements of the reorganization include the optimization of the unit’s functions to enable proactive monitoring, intelligence-led inspections, and real-time oversight of police personnel and operations across various commands, formations, and departments. The newly structured framework also aligns investigative and monitoring functions with the broader reform agenda of the force.
As part of these changes, Deputy Commissioner of Police Aliyu Abubakar has been appointed to lead the Police Monitoring Team. Abubakar previously served as Deputy Commissioner of Police in the State Criminal Investigation Departments in both the Federal Capital Territory and Rivers State, where he played a significant role in high-profile investigations and collaborated closely with state leadership to modernize investigative approaches.
The Inspector-General stated that the reform is focused on promoting professionalism, discipline, and transparency within the force. He highlighted the Monitoring Unit’s critical role in identifying operational shortcomings, enforcing standards, and ensuring accountability at all levels of the organization.
