Poll shows Lula and Bolsonaro tied before Brazil’s presidential election | Elections News

Tight Race for Brazilian Presidency Amid Controversies

Brazil’s presidential race is heating up as incumbent Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva faces a formidable challenge from right-wing candidate Flavio Bolsonaro. Recent polling reveals a deadlock, with both candidates garnering 45 percent of voter support in a hypothetical run-off. The Datafolha polling firm, which conducted the survey, reported nearly 2,004 respondents participated between May 12 and May 13.

At 80 years old, Lula is vying for a fourth nonconsecutive term, having previously served from 2003 to 2011. His presidency focused on social programs aimed at alleviating hunger and increasing assistance for the impoverished. In contrast, Flavio Bolsonaro is seeking to continue the far-right political legacy of his father, imprisoned former President Jair Bolsonaro. Flavio, currently a senator from Rio de Janeiro, has promised to advocate for his father’s release if elected.

Jair Bolsonaro is serving a 27-year prison sentence for his involvement in a coup attempt and efforts to undermine the 2022 election results that brought Lula back to power.

However, the polling data was released before recent developments regarding Flavio Bolsonaro’s campaign emerged. A report from The Intercept Brasil revealed leaked WhatsApp messages between Flavio and Daniel Vorcaro, a banker arrested in connection with an alleged fraud scheme. According to the report, Flavio Bolsonaro sought funding for a film titled “Dark Horse,” depicting his father’s life, with an initial pledge of $24 million from Vorcaro.

Flavio Bolsonaro acknowledged approaching Vorcaro but insisted that the financing request was unrelated to the banker’s alleged misconduct. In a statement, he emphasized, “It is necessary to separate the innocent from the criminals,” stressing that he was merely seeking private sponsorship for a personal project.

Left-wing lawmakers have called for an investigation into the matter, adding to a series of challenges Flavio Bolsonaro has faced during his campaign.

The senator entered the presidential race in December with his father’s endorsement but faced backlash for comments that appeared to suggest a potential withdrawal from the election if his father received amnesty. He later clarified that his candidacy was “irreversible.”

In April, Brazil’s Supreme Court authorized a federal police investigation into claims that Flavio Bolsonaro made defamatory statements about Lula.

As the election approaches in October, the contest remains close, with the two candidates neck and neck in the final stretch.
