Preserve sacrifices of Nigeria’s democratic heroes – Kefas

Governor Kefas Urges Nigerians to Uphold Democratic Values on Democracy Day

JALINGO, Nigeria — Taraba State Governor Agbu Kefas emphasized the importance of preserving and strengthening Nigeria’s democratic achievements during a message issued Friday in honor of Democracy Day, observed annually on June 12.

In his statement, Kefas called on citizens to honor those who fought for the nation’s freedom and constitutional governance. He characterized democracy as the most effective form of government, despite facing numerous challenges over the years.

“Democracy is vital because it supports the separation of powers, an independent judiciary, and a free press—key pillars of any democratic society,” he said.

Kefas acknowledged the turbulent political periods that Nigeria has navigated but expressed optimism that the nation’s democratic journey has remained resilient and evolved positively over time. He praised President Bola Tinubu for embodying democratic ideals and demonstrating a commitment to the country’s democratic growth.

Under Tinubu’s leadership, the governor noted that the executive branch has preserved the independence of other government arms. He highlighted the president’s significant role in nurturing and consolidating democracy in Nigeria.

The governor urged Nigerians to collaborate in promoting democratic values and reinforcing the rule of law. He stressed the necessity of active civic participation in governance and reminded citizens of their responsibilities as part of the social contract established through elections.

“The right to vote is one that must be protected and cherished,” Kefas said.

Additionally, he lauded the media for its essential contributions to Nigeria’s democracy, particularly in opposing tyranny and advocating for justice. He affirmed his administration’s commitment to safeguarding freedom of expression, as enshrined in the Constitution.

Kefas expressed optimism about the future of Nigeria’s democracy, asserting that continued adherence to constitutional governance will bolster democratic rule. He also acknowledged the armed forces for their vital role in enhancing Nigeria’s democratic experience.

Reflecting on the nation’s democratic history, he honored statesmen and patriots who opposed authoritarianism and laid the groundwork for a system centered on constitutionalism and the rule of law.

“Their sacrifices have not been in vain. Our nation today stands as a testament to their enduring legacy,” Kefas concluded, reiterating the call for all Nigerians to work together to protect and enhance the democratic gains achieved over the years.
