S’Court judgment: Abia PDP backs BoT’s take over of party

PDP Backs Wabara Amid Leadership Dispute

UMUAHIA — The Abia State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has affirmed its support for the party’s Board of Trustees, led by Senator Adolphus Wabara, following a recent Supreme Court ruling that annulled the 2025 Ibadan Convention.
The Supreme Court’s decision invalidated the convention that resulted in the selection of the Tanimu Turaki-led National Working Committee (NWC) and upheld the suspension of former National Secretary Sam Anyanwu along with other prominent party officials, leading to a significant leadership gap within the party.
In response to claims made by Elder Abraham Amah regarding Wabara’s supposed expulsion from the party, the Abia PDP labeled these assertions as unfounded. Ikpegbu Emeka-Yellow, the chairman of the Abia PDP Caretaker Committee, emphasized that Wabara’s alleged expulsion had been overturned by the NWC and deemed invalid by the courts.
“Elder Amah no longer holds the authority to make such claims, as he is no longer the Abia PDP Chairman,” Emeka-Yellow stated. “The assertion that Senator Wabara was expelled is both false and legally untenable.”
Emeka-Yellow praised the Supreme Court ruling, characterizing it as a significant setback for those attempting to disrupt the party’s stability. “The judgment reinforces the supremacy of the law; no one can wield powers they do not possess,” he said.
Despite the nullification of the Ibadan Convention, Emeka-Yellow considered the court’s endorsement of certain suspensions as a crucial win for the party. He expressed confidence in the Board of Trustees’ intervention as a means of restoring stability.
“The party is currently anchored under the leadership of the Board of Trustees with Senator Wabara at the helm, pending the establishment of a new leadership structure,” he noted. He urged party members to remain calm and focused, assuring them that the PDP plans to be actively involved in the upcoming 2027 general elections.
Emeka-Yellow also pointed out that the congress that resulted in Amah’s chairmanship had been overturned by both the High Court and the Court of Appeal, rendering his claims invalid. “Amah is no longer the PDP Chairman in Abia. The courts have been clear on this, and any claims he makes should be disregarded,” he asserted.
Plans are underway to formalize the party’s leadership structure, with the Board of Trustees expected to meet to initiate the establishment of an interim leadership through the National Executive Committee.
Reiterating the PDP’s resilience, Emeka-Yellow described the party as “the mother of all political parties” in Nigeria, asserting that it could not be undermined by internal conflicts or external pressures. He also expressed gratitude to the judiciary for restoring confidence in Nigeria’s democracy, noting that the Supreme Court’s verdict effectively concluded the ongoing leadership crisis within the PDP.
