Workers Rescued After Processing Mill Collapse in Kano State

Six workers were rescued from the rubble of a partially collapsed processing mill in the Gezawa Local Government Area of Kano State on Monday evening. The incident prompted a swift response from the Kano State Command of the Federal Fire Service (FFS).

A statement released on Tuesday by Al-Hassan Ahmad Kantin, the Public Relations Officer of the Federal Fire Service Kano Command, reported that the agency received a distress call around 6:45 p.m. indicating that a section of the mill had collapsed.

Firefighters from the Danzaki Fire Station were dispatched to the scene, where they discovered that a portion of the facility had caved in, trapping workers beneath the debris.

Rescue teams promptly secured the area and employed grinding machines, shovels, and specialized equipment to carefully remove the rubble. After several hours of operation, all six workers were extricated alive and received emergency medical attention.

“The successful rescue of all six victims without a single fatality showcases the professionalism, speed, and technical expertise of our rescue units,” said Kantin.

Preliminary investigations by structural safety experts determined that the collapse resulted from excessive loading of heavy raw materials and stored inventory on the upper sections of the building. The structural failure was confined to Milling Unit 1, preventing further damage to the rest of the facility.

The Federal Fire Service indicated that the operation helped protect property valued at approximately N15 million, although the collapse caused damage to parts of the building and materials estimated at N10 million.

Engr. Kazeem Sholadoye Oyefola, the Kano State Controller of the Federal Fire Service, commended the rescue team for their efforts in avoiding loss of life. He also urged developers, factory owners, and landlords to conduct regular structural safety inspections on their buildings, especially with the onset of the rainy season.
