Some Nigerian men lack emotional depth – Toke Makinwa
Media Personality Toke Makinwa Critiques Emotional Intelligence in Nigerian Relationships
Nigerian media personality Toke Makinwa has ignited a discussion online regarding the emotional intelligence of men in Nigeria. During a recent episode of the MENtality podcast, hosted by Ebuka Obi-Uchendu, Makinwa expressed concerns that many Nigerian men view financial provision as their primary contribution to relationships, often at the expense of emotional connection and effective communication.
Makinwa stated that the perception of Nigerian women as overly materialistic stems, in part, from the dynamics of how some men conduct relationships. She pointed out that many men tend to equate generosity with affection, believing that financial offerings alone can attract or sustain a partner’s interest.
“In my experience, some men quickly revert to financial gestures rather than investing time to understand their potential partners,” Makinwa noted. She referenced a longstanding tradition wherein relationships may be seen as transactional, remarking that this behavior perpetuates a culture where material expectations are increasingly prevalent.
According to Makinwa, women have come to prioritize material benefits because men consistently demonstrate that financial resources are a primary currency in relationships. “Most girls who are materialistic today, men taught them how to make demands,” she said.
Her comments have elicited mixed reactions on social media. While some users agreed with her assessment of the lack of emotional intelligence in relationships, others felt that her views unfairly generalized the behavior of Nigerian men.
