Three Chinese, others arrested over alleged illegal mining in Nasarawa

Nasarawa Deputy Governor Leads Arrest of Chinese Nationals in Illegal Mining Operation

KADUNA, Nigeria — Emmanuel Akabe, the deputy governor of Nasarawa State, has spearheaded a security operation that resulted in the arrest of three Chinese nationals along with several others in Amba community, located in the Kokona Local Government Area. The arrests were made in connection with alleged illegal mining activities.

The operation targeted a site suspected of unauthorized mining, where security personnel apprehended individuals believed to be involved in these illicit activities. Authorities reportedly seized several cartons containing suspected mineral resources and a variety of equipment used in the illegal operations. This included CCTV cameras and other materials that were allegedly installed to facilitate the mining activities.

Following the operation, Akabe expressed concern over the ongoing illegal mining, noting that government directives to suspend such activities were being ignored. He emphasized that he personally led the raid to observe the situation firsthand.

The deputy governor expressed dismay at the presence of foreign nationals allegedly mining without the necessary legal documentation. “As a responsible government, Nasarawa State will not permit illegal ventures and will uphold the sanctity of the law,” Akabe stated. He noted that mining falls under the exclusive legislative purview of the Federal Government, which has the authority to regulate sector activities.

Akabe also highlighted that there had been no agreements concerning corporate social responsibility or environmental impact assessments prior to the commencement of mining operations at the site. He warned that individuals found culpable in this matter would face stringent legal consequences.

In light of ongoing litigations concerning the mining site, Akabe confirmed that the area will remain closed until the issues are resolved. He urged local citizens to support efforts aimed at maintaining peace and stability within the state.

The arrested Chinese nationals, speaking through an interpreter, claimed they had been mining in the area since last year on behalf of their superiors based in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory. Authorities indicated that further investigations are underway, and those found responsible will be prosecuted accordingly.
