Thugs invade Ondo Assembly amid Speaker’s impeachment saga
In a chaotic turn of events, the Ondo State House of Assembly experienced a disruption on Thursday as suspected thugs entered the complex amid ongoing impeachment proceedings against Speaker Olamide Oladiji.
The group reportedly stormed the legislative premises, roaming the hallways and offices in an act described by witnesses as an effort to intimidate both lawmakers and administrative staff. Sources indicated that the individuals may have been mobilized to prevent Oladiji’s removal, which has become a contentious issue within the Assembly.
For several tense minutes, the intruders disrupted the day’s legislative activities, prompting staff members to barricade themselves in their offices to avoid confrontation. An anonymous Assembly staffer stated that a coordinated effort among lawmakers and security personnel was necessary to expel the intruders.
“It took the combined efforts of Hon. Oguntodu, several members of the House, and security agencies to ensure the hoodlums were removed from the premises,” the source said. “They were moving erratically, and no one could ascertain their specific mission until intervention occurred.”
The push for impeachment has gained momentum, with 22 of the 26 Assembly members signing a notice for Oladiji’s immediate resignation. Allegations against the Speaker include financial impropriety, specifically the alleged diversion of N44 million from the Ondo State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission budget.
In response to the upheaval, security measures around the Assembly complex have been strengthened, and some lawmakers are currently engaged in an extended meeting to discuss the situation.
