Transfer: ‘Absolute bargain’ – Rio Ferdinand names player who’ll hand title to Arsenal this season
Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has indicated that Arsenal’s acquisition of defender Ezri Konsa could enhance the team’s chances of securing the Premier League title this season.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has been in search of defensive reinforcements following injuries to William Saliba and Jurrien Timber. Konsa, who can play both center-back and right-back, has emerged as a key target.
Aston Villa initially set a price of £60 million for Konsa, but, according to David Ornstein of The Athletic, Arsenal has successfully negotiated a deal worth £51 million, supplemented by potential add-ons.
Konsa is expected to undergo a medical examination on Thursday, having already said his goodbyes to teammates at Villa Park.
Ferdinand praised Arsenal for acquiring Konsa, describing him as a valuable addition to the squad. He noted that the £51 million transfer fee is competitive given the current market conditions, emphasizing Konsa’s potential to contribute four to five years of high-quality football.
In his remarks on his YouTube channel, Ferdinand stated, “This is a remarkable signing. A player in his prime who possesses a clear understanding of his identity and capabilities. He is straightforward, a solid and exceptionally skilled Premier League defender.”
Ferdinand highlighted that Konsa’s experience would allow for a seamless transition into the team during the absences of Saliba and Timber. He reiterated that this signing emphasizes Arsenal’s ambition to reclaim the Premier League title.
“He’s going to be great cover, someone who can come in there and just play straight away, no questions asked,” Ferdinand added. “If you go and get him, that just reinforces why I think Arsenal are going to go and win the league again, because it’s a sensible and very good signing.”
Konsa will be Arsenal’s fourth new signing of the summer transfer window, joining Christos Tzolis, Illan Meslier, and Bruno Guimaraes. Additionally, Piero Hincapie, who was on loan last season from Bayer Leverkusen, has signed permanently with the club.
