Truck crushes man to death on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway

A man, whose identity has not yet been established, was killed in a suspected hit-and-run incident on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway near the OPIC corridor in Ogun State on Wednesday afternoon. The crash occurred shortly before 1 p.m. as the victim, described as a young adult, attempted to cross the expressway from the Lagos-bound carriageway to the roadside.
Witnesses reported that a speeding truck struck the man before the driver fled the scene. The collision resulted in severe injuries, with parts of the victim’s body scattered across the roadway, prompting other motorists to slow down and navigate around the area.
An eyewitness, identified as Nojeem, recounted the circumstances surrounding the incident, stating that the man was crossing the highway when the truck hit him. He expressed concern over the frequency of such fatal accidents on the busy route and advocated for the construction of a pedestrian bridge to enhance safety for individuals attempting to cross.
By 2 p.m., the victim’s remains were still on the roadway. Babatunde Akinbiyi, spokesperson for the Ogun State Traffic Compliance Agency, confirmed the incident and noted that TRACE officials, along with members of the Amotekun Corps, had been deployed to manage traffic in the aftermath of the crash.
Akinbiyi characterized the incident as a hit-and-run that took place at the OPIC bus stop on the Lagos-bound section of the expressway. He indicated that traffic flow had been disrupted but that efforts were underway to clear the scene.
Later, around 6 p.m., Akinbiyi provided an update confirming that the Federal Road Safety Corps had removed the body from the road, transporting it to Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital in Sagamu. He added that the evacuation was completed and normal traffic conditions had resumed on the affected portion of the expressway.
