Ogun police begin ‘Operation Velvet’, warn officers against extortion, harassment

The Ogun State Police Command has reinstated Operation VELVET across all 20 local government areas, emphasizing a zero-tolerance policy for extortion or intimidation of motorists. Officers caught engaging in these practices will face disciplinary actions.

The operation, which follows directives from Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Rilwan Disu, utilizes intelligence-led strategies aimed at enforcing traffic regulations and ensuring smooth vehicular movement throughout the state.

In a statement issued on Thursday, police spokesperson DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi outlined that the operation will focus on issues such as one-way driving, reckless driving, unauthorized use of sirens, vehicles displaying fake or obscured license plates, unlicensed drivers, overloading, and improper parking.

“Operation VELVET must never serve as a pretext for extortion, illegal detention, harassment, or unauthorized impoundment,” Babaseyi stated.

He also mentioned that Commissioner of Police Bode Ojajuni has instructed Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers (DPOs), and Unit Heads to ensure strict adherence to these guidelines. Supervisory officers will be responsible for the actions of their subordinates, and any personnel found guilty of bribery, intimidation, or other forms of professional misconduct will face immediate disciplinary measures under Police Regulations.

The Commissioner has additionally stressed the importance of proper briefings for all personnel deployed under this operation, ensuring their adherence to ethical standards while respecting the fundamental rights of all citizens.

The Ogun State Police Command urges motorists and transport operators to comply with traffic laws and to avoid offering bribes in an effort to evade penalties.
