Vandalism: Police deny torturing female suspect in Abia during investigation

Abia State Police Denies Allegations of Torture and Frame-Up

The Abia State Police Command has refuted claims made in an online report accusing it of framing and torturing Tochi Ireokwu, a suspended Deputy Director of Logistics and Supply for the Abia State Homeland Security Service.

In a statement issued by DSP Maureen Chinaka, the Police Public Relations Officer, the commanding body emphasized that the allegations are unfounded and misrepresent the actual events surrounding the incident.

Authorities stated that Ireokuwa, along with three other suspects, was apprehended as a result of actionable intelligence. They are accused of engaging in economic sabotage, vandalism, theft, conspiracy, and aiding and abetting criminal activity.

The police narrative indicates that on April 4, 2026, Ireokwu and one of her assistants visited a government property. They allegedly misled the Chief Security Officer (CSO) into handing over a set of keys under the pretense of inspecting and inventorying the premises for security purposes. During this process, police claim Ireokwu removed several keys from the set before returning the remainder.

Furthermore, the police allege that Ireokwu led a group that vandalized the property and stole valuable items, including electrical cables, motors, and batteries, which were loaded into a wine-red Toyota Sienna without a license plate.

According to the police, all four suspects were detained at the scene by officers from the nearest division while responding to the intelligence report. After the case was transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Ireokwu reportedly made a confessional statement. The suspects are currently in police custody as they await proceedings in the Federal High Court in Umuahia.
