Former Venezuelan Leaders Charged with Torture in U.S. Court
New York, NY — A federal court in Manhattan has charged former Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, with conspiracy to commit torture. This charge, announced on Thursday, relates to allegations that the couple tortured political opponents in order to maintain their grip on power.
The new indictment adds to the existing drug trafficking charges they face in the United States. Both Maduro and Flores have pleaded not guilty to these drug-related offenses. They have been in custody at Brooklyn’s Metropolitan Detention Center since their apprehension.
Their trial is set to begin on June 1. The current allegations are part of a broader criminal case against them, which includes accusations that Maduro collaborated with cartel organizations to transport cocaine from Venezuela to the U.S.
This is a developing story.
