World Health Organization Declares Global Health Emergency Over Ebola Outbreak
The World Health Organization (WHO) has classified the ongoing Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and neighboring Uganda as a global health emergency.
While the situation is characterized as a global health crisis rather than a pandemic, the WHO has cautioned that the outbreak may be much larger than currently detected cases suggest.
In response to the rising threat, the WHO is urging countries worldwide to activate national disaster response mechanisms. Additionally, the organization recommends implementing both cross-border and internal screening measures to curb the spread of the virus.
Notable figures contributing to discussions on the crisis include James Bays, the presenter for a recent report, along with prominent guests: Ariel Kestens, head of the Kinshasa delegation for the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies; Dr. Margaret Harris, a lecturer at the United Nations Institute for Training and Research; and Dr. Ahmed Ogwell Ouma, former deputy director-general of the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention.
This declaration is critical as health officials work to contain the outbreak and safeguard public health across the region and beyond.
